This first tune is found in the repertoire of the well known concertina player Mrs Crotty of Kilrush, Co.Clare, and is a version of the setdance air, “The Blackbird”. We learned the tune from the unique bosouki playing of Dublin musician Johnny Moynihan.
McGivney’s Fancy is from the playing of Thomas Kiernan, a 19th century blind fiddle player from Co. Longford. Eamon McGivney (fiddle) came across the melody in a Longford manuscript, and gave it to Offaly accordion player Paddy O’Brien, who subsequently recorded the hornpipe as “McGivney's Fancy”. Related melodies include “The Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Jacky Tar”.
