about

This 200 year old song air belongs to a class of Gaelic melodies which celebrate a longing for a return home to the ancestral Scottish Highlands. It is followed by the jig, The Mist Covered Mountain, composed by fiddle player Junior Creehan from near Mullagh in West Clare. The inspiration came from an early morning view over nearby Mount Callan after a night of music and dance at a local swaree. Charlie learned the tune from whistle player Micho Russell at the U.S. Bicentennial Celebrations in Washington D.C. in 1976, which was also attended by Junior Creehan. Port tSeain Sean can be found in Ceol Rince na hEireann Vol. 1. and came from the repertoire of piper “Old” John Potts from Dublin. The collector Brendan Breathnach called it “Old John’s Jig”, having obtained the tune from the piper.
